The person was killed in a 2002 Honda Accord crash when the driver’s airbag inflator exploded, according to the NHTSA.
There have been 33 people killed by air bags worldwide. Takata created an explosion to inflate airbags in a crash.
The metal canister can be damaged in the explosion. In the US, most of the deaths and injuries happen.
All owners were urged to check their vehicles for unrepaired Takata airbag recalls.
If a driver has an open recall, they can go to the NHtsa.gov website and key in their identification number.
The agency says that even minor crashes can cause airbags to inflate and cause explosions that can kill or hurt people.
