Jones was labelled as "questionable" by the Patriots on Saturday for their Monday Night Football game against the Chicago Bears.
Bailey Zappe, a rookie, is anticipated to make his third consecutive start if he chooses not to play.
Before being hurt, Jones had a 1-2 record as a starter.Despite getting hurt against the Green Bay Packers in his only start, backup Brian Hoyer was given a defeat.
Zappe, on the other hand, has had two strong starts and is getting better every week.
Over the past two weeks, he is 2-0 and has completed just under 75% of his throws for 497 yards and three touchdowns.
Given how Bailey Zappe has been performing, the Patriots wouldn't be foolish to go with extreme caution when it comes to Mac Jones,
who just had an ankle injury and was restricted in practise this past week.
